CLARENCE WALDRON

Posted in Show Notes

Jet Magazine’s veteran senior writer Clarence Waldron was recently presented with the Legacy Award by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), who saluted him as “the dean of entertainment journalists.”

“It’s really a great feeling to be recognized by my peers in the news industry,” Waldron says of the honor. “I am overwhelmed by the accolades I received from some of the celebrity newsmakers I have written about and interviewed. It was really a full, emotional, spirit-filled moment for me.”

Many of the celebrities Waldron has interviewed through his 28-year career at JET applauded his stellar reporting and writing. (Click on the video below to see what the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Steve Harvey, Frankie Beverly, Al Sharpton and others had to say about the journalist, who, according to singer Brandy Norwood, “makes you feel so comfortable you end up telling all your business.”)

Previous recipients of the Legacy Award include USA Today’s music critic Steve Jones, the Michigan Chronicle’s Rita Griffin (who interviewed Diana Ross and the Supremes and other early Motown artists before they received mainstream coverage) and the legendary founder of JET and Ebony magazines John H. Johnson, who hired Waldron 28 years ago.
