Rev. William D. Smart, Jr., Director of Training and Outreach

William began as an organizer with LAANE on the LAX Community Benefits Project, which won $500 million in concessions for the communities around the airport. He worked as an organizer for the Safe and Secure Coalition and then directed LAANE’s campaign – in partnership with the Teamsters and Change to Win – to support the workers who drive trucks to and from the ports. He has also served as the director of the Century Blvd and Long Beach Hospitality Projects. Currently William conducts trainings around the country while working on several LAANE initiatives in the African American community. He has been pastor of several congregations and a professor of religion and special assistant to the president of a college. Early in his career, William served as a planner for an economic development corporation in Arkansas. He has a bachelor’s degree in social work from Miles College and a master’s in divinity from Duke University. He is currently Senior Pastor of Christ Liberation Ministries and has performed many of LAANE’s staff marriages since coming on board. William is married to Thembekila and they have three children: Gregory, KarmaNia and Jehoshua.
