Attorney General Opens Investigation into Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department

Regarding Mitrice Richardson

February 12, 2016

Michael Richardson received a letter this week from California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ office indicating that her office would be investigating the conduct of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as it relates to disappearance and death of Ms. Richardson.

Richardson was a young woman with mental health issues who was released from the Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu/Lost Hills station in under strange circumstances after midnight one evening in September 2009 and then mysteriously vanished only to be found dead 11 months later.

This latest news comes on the heels of former Sheriff Lee Baca’s guilty plea and admission that he lied when he told federal authorities that he was unaware that his subordinates planned to approach the FBI agent leading the jail investigation at her home. For years Baca insisted he played no role in the misconduct that tarnished the LASD.

Paul Tanaka, Baca’s former second in command, is scheduled to stand trial in March on charges that he obstructed a federal investigation into brutality and corruption by sheriff’s deputies in the county jails.

The Malibu/Lost Hills station’s jurisdiction stretches from the Malibu coastline inland to Agoura Hills and Calabasas, is no stranger to controversy. It made headlines in 2006 after deputies were investigated for allegedly giving Mel Gibson, who had been arrested and booked for drunk driving, “preferential treatment.” In 2013, allegations of sexual misconduct among Lost Hills staff members resulted in an internal shake-up and reorganization. The following year, a Lost Hills deputy who was typing on his onboard computer hit and killed music executive Milton Olin as he was riding his bicycle in Calabasas. After the deputy was not charged, Olin’s family filed a wrongful-death suit against the LASD.

  1. On this mornings show I was not intending on sounding crass or being disrespectful to guest, host, or listeners. If I offended anyone my sincerest apologies. My Intention was to make a co-relation of Leroy Baca and the conditions at the Men’s Central Jail to a slumlord/tenant type scenario. Dominique my passion might have had me slightly “turnt up” but the way the whole case has been mishandled warrants such reaction. Hoping Mr. Richardson receives due justice for his beloved daughter. Life Matters, No doubt!!!!!

  2. Lady D – I agree with you. I think that this story is not going to end up with a happy ending. I just hope that it ends up with some clusroe for her family. I feel for those that love Hasanni Campbell or Chioma as they remain missing….
